Woody Pitkat emerged from Sunday's NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season finale, held as part of the World Series at Thompson International Speedway (CT), with a solid top 10 finish.  The result was good enough to ensure Pitkat of the ninth position in the WMT point standings.
“We tried to beat who we needed to beat in the points to finish in the top 10," said Pitkat.  "We went back to what worked well at the Icebreaker where we were fast.  It's just stupid stuff that happens.  All day was a battle.  All in all, though it was a top ten finish which was a good effort.

That top ten finish didn't come easily though.  It was a race where there were many wrecks, and Pitkat dodged most of them.  With 41 laps to go though, he got caught in one of the multi-car incidents - which left Pitkat parked in the frontstretch grass.

“We missed a bunch of wrecks and then spun.  We got stuck in the mud,” Pitkat said.

Amazingly though, Pitkat managed to get himself out of the mud before losing a lap to the leaders.

“That was the first thing that I was thinking of.  I saw a guy on the side of me and I think he was trying to tell me to wait for the wrecker.  But I knew it was the last race of the year and I didn't want to go a lap down.  I just kept trying to do whatever I could to get out.  I'm sure that I blasted mud on somebody, but I wanted to get out of there.”

Although the Thompson race concludes the regular season for Pitkat and his King Racing team, the combination will still race once more this year.  They are planning on entering the North South Shootout at Concord Speedway (NC) on November 7th and hope to turn around what has been a second half of the season with more than Pitkat's fair share of bad luck.

“The first six or eight races were really good, but the last five or six, we had some bad luck.  But bringing it back in one piece [at Thompson] helps.  We'll focus on the Shootout now.”

The top ten finish in the Modified Tour feature was not the only strong result that Pitkat posted in the World Series.  He also finished second in the Late Model feature and fifth in the Sunoco Modified event.
