On the Sunday of the Icebreaker at Thompson International Speedway, Woody Pitkat finished in the middle of the pack with one racecar and took home a top five finish in another racecar. One of his racecars ran flawlessly, while the other one was a bear to adjust during the day.
But the finishes didn't match up the way that you might think. Pitkat's Hitchcock Pool Water Sunoco Modified team took a car they were struggling with and managed to get it into a fourth-place finishing position, while the #28 King Racing team that Pitkat drives for on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour watched as a top five run turned into a 19th-place finish after a spin in that 150-lap event.
“In the Sunoco Modified, I don't think that we were good enough for fourth, but we ended up there. With the Tour car, we should have finished fourth and didn't get there,” said Pitkat.
The Sunoco Modified feature was first up and Pitkat worked his way from deep in the pack to get near the front in that race.
“Saturday we weren't really happy with our primary car, so we took the other car out. It has a fresh motor though and figured it might be okay here. We started in the back and I drove my butt off.”
Then came the Tour Modified race, where Pitkat started 22nd, but made his way into the top five late in the going before he had a late-race incident with Ronnie Silk.
“I was just trying to stay out of the trouble and pick off as many cars early to try and get up to the good guys…or the guys that you think are the good guys. Those are usually the guys that you could run with.
“Today showed that there was one guy who I couldn't run with. On a restart, everyone got to bumping there because Teddy [Christopher] slowed down. Then [Ronnie] Silk decided he was going to chop me, which was fine. But when you go that low into the dirt, there is only one way to go and that is up the track. I got back in line and I thought I was better than he was, so I tried to pass him and he brake-checked me. That was it, I wheel-hopped him and spun. It was nonsense.”
